Meeting Minutes
There were twenty  present at our August meeting:  Maggie, Martha, Joan, Elena, Leslie, Katie, Jude, Denise, Virginia, Sue, Andrea, Vicki, Cindy, Julie W., Julie G., Kathryn, Janet, Ron and Ann C.  Also attending was Katie's guest, Chloe, who is her granddaughter ( a future dollmaker, creative sewist perhaps???)  Great to have you, Chloe!

Show and Tell
Denise brought "Countess celebrates her 21st Birthday" a fabulous doll with lots of detail.  She also brought her "Hemit Shellfae" sculpted from polymer clay.  Dawn Schiller has classes online for this interesting sculpture.  Great job, Denise!

Joan shared more of her talents in bookmaking from classes she has taken at Heron and Ivy Tech.  Her book "Doors" opens out to show pictures of her trip to Cozumel, Puerto Rico, Istanbul and other points of interest. She showed us a puzzle book with an Istanbul theme and a jelly print book "The Matter of Art".  These books are fascinating and well done.  Thanks for sharing, Joan!

Martha told us about a quilt she entered in the Indiana State Fair.

Leslie finished a faery from Barbara Schoenoff's class. She used inktense pencils which gave a beautiful and colorful look to the doll.  A wonderful technique to share with us, Leslie!  She also shared a beaded shadowbox creation.

Elena had also entered the state fair and received a blue ribbon and an honorable mention.  She showed a picture of "Ariel" a clay sculpted doll she had made for her neighbor's granddaughter.  (Lucky Girl!)

Julie G. brought "Belle" a test doll designed by Barbara Schoenoff.

Sue proudly shared several dolls:  "Fleur" from a pattern by Barbara Schoenoff for which she got a second place ribbon at The Ohio State Fair, "Butterfly" from Lucy Landry's Brigette pattern for which she got a blue ribbon at The Ohio State Fair, "Margo" another blue ribbon winner, and "June Bride" a red ribbon doll.  Congratulations on your accomplishments, Sue!  She also shared a puppet she bought at GenCon where she met the voice of Kermit the Frog!

Virginia shared a cute doll from a pattern she found on Etsy with an interesting head attachment, a doll named "Smoke", her Fleur doll from Barbara Schoenoff's pattern, her "Beastie" doll from the May challenge, and a dragon she made.  She also attended Gen Con and purchased a puppet.

Business Meeting
Katie is working  with Carmel Monthly magazine on doing an article on our doll club with an interview from a club member who lives in the area.
We discussed Marla Niederer's Mermaid Doll Class and possibly having a pitch in dinner on Saturday evening and working as late as we want at the library.  Virginia volunteered to be in charge of the dinner (Thank you, Virginia!).  Julie G. invited participants to her home for a cocktail party for Marla on Friday evening before the weekend of classes so she could meet everyone and suggested bringing any doll creations we would like to share with Marla.

Round Robin/Brown Bag dolls were exchanged.  The final exchange will be at the October meeting when the original creator will receive her completed doll with all it's embellishments. 

AFICC is now open for registration.  It runs from April 25 to April 28, 2019.  This will be a fun and exciting event.  Two of our own members will be teaching there this year!  Suellen Odell will be teaching three one day classes on three different dolls:  Darling Dot, Sweet Bunny, and Kitty Kat.  Barbara Schoenoff will teach a one day class for her Victorian Mermaid, and a two day class for her Fleur. You are encouraged to visit http://cyndysdolls.com for all the details and to register.  This event only occurs every two years so you don't want to miss it!

Our August program was presented by Denise on Making a Journal.  Members created their own journals following Denise's excellent instruction.  We were amazed at our own creative journals at the end of the program.  Denise generously sent us a detailed Tutorial by email.  She put a lot of time in doing so and we want you to know, Denise, how much we appreciate what you did.  These journals are fabulous and no doubt our members will be making more of them thanks to you!

Next Meeting
Our September meeting is on the 15th.  Joan will give us instruction on making a folding cutting board.  This will be a demonstration and she plans to have a handout for us.

October Meeting Minutes

This month the following members were present:  Sue, Virginia, Jude, Denise, Helen, Vicki, Julie G., Kathryn, Ron, Andrea, Janet, Julie W., Leslie, Ann C., and Nita. 

We welcomed new member, Helen, who shared with us her love of doll making. She told us she is inspired to make dolls to make people smile and that they do!  One of the dolls she has made has a cloth body with clay face, hands, and feet.  Elena said this doll reminds her of her granddaughter in Russia.  Another doll she brought was rather whimsical and certainly made us smile! Fabulous dolls, Elena!  Thanks for sharing!

This month was packed with lots of dolls for show and tell.  We had our round robin/bag dolls, faeries, and a challenge doll.  Cyndy Sieving of Cyndy's Dolls came all the way from Ohio to judge our 2017 Challenge Dolls as well as critique other dolls members brought.  Cyndy is a wonderful doll artist in her own right and brought some of her "blanks" to share with us. These are made of muslin which she will then gesso, sand, and paint several times until the muslin becomes leather like. Thank you Cyndy for taking time to come be with us and share your expertise!  Can't wait to see your finished "Blanks"!

 Virginia brought her completed doll she made in Charlie Patricolo's recent class at Silk Road Textiles in Cincinnati.  She also brought two completed Faery dolls from Barbara Schoenoff's class and her Winifred Doll with her Pig and another doll with painted boots that were ribbon winners at the Ohio State Fair.

Denise was also a participant in Charlie's class and brought her completed doll along with two faeries from her Naughty Faery Review also made in Barbara Schoenoff's class.

Leslie brought her challenge doll "Fly Away Katie" in progress.  She is using Derwent Inktense pencils and we hope she will share more of this technique with us in the future.  Sorry, no pictures until her project is completed😞.

Andrea put her challenge doll on hold while preparing for a fabulous vacation.. Hope to see it at the November show, Andrea!!!

Kathryn brought her Faery doll with "Holographic Wings.  Very nice, Kathryn!  She also shared "Boo".  Is it a ghost, witch or pumpkin?

Then came the great reveal of the Round Robyn/Bag Doll exchange.  This was so exciting!  The expressions on the recipients were priceless!  Here are the dolls:

The dolls had such a good time traveling around to all the member's homes.  They wanted to stay together at the library to share the tales of their journeys before going home and will be on display at the Irvington Library until the November Show and Sale on November 18 where they again will be on display.


After Show and Tell and the big reveal we went on with our business meeting while Cyndy was doing her judging.  Leslie is unable to finish out her term as vice-president and Andrea has been assuming her remaining duties for this year.  Election of officers will be at the December meeting.  It was suggested we perhaps have co-vice-presidents.  Denise, Sue, Virginia and Julie G., were willing to share the position.  This will be discussed at the December meeting and voted upon.  Maggie will  be resigning as the Show and Sale chairperson, so that position is open for anyone interested.  The other position that is open is the Publicity Chairperson.  We are open to suggestions for programs for meetings in 2018.  Bring your ideas to the December meeting.
Our fall workshop for 2018 is scheduled for September 29 and 30 at the Irvington Library with Marla Niederer making a mermaid doll.  Check out Marla's blog.  One of our members is mentioned!
Andrea informed us that our challenge with River City is themed "Beasties" and will be in Cincinnati for our May meeting 2018.

15th Annual Show and Sale
We will be setting up for the sale at the Irvington United Methodist Church, 30 N. Audubon Rd., Indianapolis on Friday, November 17 from 3-5pm.  Tables will be provided by the church and Leslie is bringing tablecloths to cover them.  She is also bringing our nice big sign.  Katie has the sidewalk signs and will bring them.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate, but be prepared for anything!  This is Indiana you know!  If you can't come Friday to set up you can come early Saturday morning at 8 am.  The show is scheduled to be 9-4.  We will have display tables for the following:  Dolls made at AFICC, Faery Review Dolls, Tarot Challenge Dolls, Picture Book Challenge Dolls, Round Robin/Bag Dolls, any new dolls you have made the past year that have not been previously displayed.  These dolls will need labels with the doll's name, maker, and pattern designer.
Remember, if you didn't have a doll for the Picture Book Challenge judging in October, you are still eligible to enter a Picture Book doll in the Challenge for People's Choice award at the November Show and Sale.  This doll must be accompanied by a book or photo of/from a book, with title, author, and illustrator.

November Meeting Minutes

There was no official meeting in November as we had our annual Show and Sale that day.  We thank the Irvington United Methodist Church for allowing us to use one of their rooms for our show.  It is such a nice place to show off our dolls and set up our sales tables.  Thank you everyone who helped make this happen!

We had seven entries in this years' Elements Challenge for judging and those plus three more for the People's Choice Award. In the judging Andrea's Quark was FIRST PLACE!  Not only that, she also won the Peoples' Choice Award!!!!  Congratulations, Andrea.  She is beautiful!

Next Meeting

December 17 is our annual Christmas Party!  It will be a pitch in brunch and (optional) gift exchange.  We will be choosing a 2017 challenge, voting on officers and revealing Sue's UFO challenges for December, We don't have a list of those who were going to do Sue's UFO challenge so all new show & tell dolls (must be a doll) will get a prize! 

If you would like to participate in the gift exchange, bring a doll related gift (limit of $25).  This could be something from your stash, something purchased, or something made by you.  Our exchange is optional, don't feel obligated!

Most of our officers are willing to serve again next year,  However, if you would like to serve, the positions of vice president and publicity chairman are up for grabs!

Bring your ideas for our 2017 challenge.  There were many good ones last year. Let's see what we can come up with for next year.

Think about your favorite doll makers and let us know who you might like to have as a guest teacher for next year.  This is a busy time of year for us all and there will be several of our members with other commitments on the day of our meeting.  If you cannot attend, but have suggestions for our challenge or guest teacher, please email one of the officers.
