Enigma class with Deanna Hogan

March 11-12, 2023

Enigma class with Deanna Hogan

Deanna Hogan's Enigma

A group of Indy Art Doll Makers were honored to take this class with doll artist and teacher Deanna Hogan of Blue Heron Dolls. She is a member of the Original Doll Artist Council of America (ODACA) .  Deanna let us work at our own pace and guided us through the steps with individual instruction when we needed it.  Handouts were provided with photos to help us end up with a completed doll. Her instruction was clear and concise, and her level of instruction was excellent!  Everyone was indeed happy with their dolls and most came very near to completing their dolls in class.  Some even made two dolls!  Look at all those smiling faces at the end of the class!

We discussed this year's charity project.  This discussion will be continued at future meetings and decided on at a later date.  Ideas were gathered for programs for the upcoming meetings.  Plans were made for Deanna Hogan's upcoming class on March 11 & 12.  Our May meeting will be a joint meeting with INfiber at which time we will be working on spirit dolls.  We will pick out patterns for the dolls at our March meeting.  Katie will talk to INfiber to work out what we are considering doing.
There was no official program for the February meeting, but we did have a swap meet with lots of stuff from our stashes to share.

Katie told us about her signing an agreement with an art gallery in Evansville to display some of her dolls and textile creations.  Congrats, Katie!

Ann R. announced she is downsizing her fabric collection.  She has all kinds of fabric including cottons, Ultrasuede and real wool felt.  Members are willing to help her!!!

Joan shared a little portable printer, an HP Sprocket printer that prints 2.3"x 2.4" photos instantly!  They are the perfect size for journaling.  Technology is amazing!  Thanks for sharing, Joan.

On to business, Andrea is checking with the church for this year's show and sale.
Leslie and Ann R. are looking for other doll clubs across the country we might be able to connect with in some way.
Sue is looking into classes for next year with some wonderful doll artists.

It was decided we would not have a specific theme for this year's Christmas gift exchange, but there is a $25 limit on spending, although anything made from your stash like a doll is certainly fine.

We will be having a Round Robin doll exchange this year!  Each month your doll will be passed on to another doll creator to add her special touch.  In February, those who want to participate will bring a blank doll body in a bag. It could be an unfinished doll from a past project if you like.  It is preferred that the head is not attached [to make it easier to dress] but if the head is already attached you don't need to remove it.  It is also nice to include a small blank book so people can add notes about the doll as she progresses.  Following is the proposed schedule:
February - drop off the body
March - Face
April - Clothing
June - Hair (and attach head if needed)
August - Shoes, embellishments and accessories

We are considering supporting a different charity this year.  This will be decided at a future meeting.

A collaboration with the InFiber group was discussed.

We shared patterns of elinor peace bailey for the upcoming challenge in July.

Deanna Hogan Class
The Deanna Hogan class will be held on March 11 & 12.  The estimated cost will be $150.
There is one opening for the class.  If you are interested, contact Julie G.  Patterns and directions for pre-work will be sent to you after you have paid for the class.

December 17, 2022 Meeting Minutes

Attendees: Andrea B., Ann R., Julie and Ron G., Jude H., Katie J., Kathryn W., Joan W., Julie W., Barbara S., Leslie W.
Show and Sale wrap-up

The times for the show and sale were discussed.  Do we want to change the times? After some discussion, it was decided to leave the times the same since many people attend every year, and changing the time could be confusing.

The Hope Center Indy has not acknowledged the financial gifts given to them after the sale, so we will look at a different charity for next year.

Nomination of Officers

The slate of officers for 2023 was nominated:  President - Andrea, Vice Presidents - Julie W., Sue and Virginia, Secretary/Blog - Julie W. with assistance from Joan, Treasurer - Jude, Publicity - Ann C., Show and Sale - Open, Outreach ( See UFDC below) - Leslie and Ann R.

Due to low attendance, Andrea will contact the nominees and will send an email for voting.

United Federation of Doll Clubs

There was a discussion on the benefits of joining UFDC.  Leslie and Ann R. will form a committee to look into our group joining UFDC and explore the cost and connection with the group.

Georgetown Illinois HS charity project

We were going to assemble kits to make a simple doll at our January meeting. However, Barbara has not heard back from the teacher regarding this project. Barbara will try to contact her again, and perhaps this will be a future meeting project.

Deanna Hogan Class

The Deanna Hogan class will be held on March 11 & 12.  The estimated cost will be $150.
There is one opening for the class.  If you are interested, contact Julie G.

InFiber Collaberation

Indy Art Doll Makers will collaborate with InFiber to make spirit dolls in 2023.  The theme for the dolls is Four Seasons. We would like to have a day workshop with both groups prior to the due date - TBD.  The dolls will be displayed at the November show and sale. Katie will bring up the workshop at the next InFiber meeting.

Christmas Party, Christmas Carol gift exchange, and Challenge Ideas for next year.

The group enjoyed the delicious food shared by the members, and the group discussed possible challenge themes for 2023. Multiple ideas were suggested, and after several elimination rounds of voting, weather was the winning theme for 2023. A close runner-up was Elinor Peace Bailey dolls.  Since we have had two challenges in previous years, it was decided that Elinor Peace Bailey dolls will be a challenge for July.  This will not be a voted challenge but will be a display only.
