January Meeting Minutes
We were pleased to have seventeen members present for our January meeting: Elena, Joan, Maggie, Ann C., Vicki, Sue, Virginia, Jude, Andrea, Martha, Cindy, Katie, Julie W., Ann R., Julie G., Ron, and Leslie.
Show and Tell
Sue started off show and tell with her three sweet Luna Lapin bunnies based on the book "Making Luna Lapin" by Sarah Peel. Luna has many stories to tell and so many clothes to wear. Thanks for sharing, Sue!
Virginia also made a Luna bunny with a cute pink dress. She brought her ethnic doll that was made for last year's challenge which she named Zendaya and a lovely doll named Starcatcher made from a Barbara Schoenoff pattern. Nice work, Virginia!
Joan shared pictures of her trip to Pakistan and her granddaughter's wedding. We were all in awe of the beautiful dresses of the wedding party. Great inspiration for costuming the dolls we make.
Elena didn't get to come to the Christmas party, but she had made a wonderful angel for the exchange made from clay. This is the year of the rat in the 2020 Chinese new year and she had made a wonderful tea cozy and a cute little yellow and black rat for the occasion. Perfect for the Chinese New year, Elena!
Andrea told us about her parents going to a native art retreat in Peru where they learned about handweaving and had brought her back a bag and a doll with hand woven alpaca clothing. It's obvious your parents love you, Andrea!
Business Meeting
Jude gave her treasurer's report and the budget for 2020 was discussed including how to fund the scholarship fund.
For publicity it was suggested we might have a demo table at local art shows. We could also have presentation packets to present to different venues about our art form. Andrea will also check with the central library to see if we could have a display of our dolls there.
We discussed a possible field trip to the Eiteljorg Museum where there will be an exhibit entitled "Quilts: Uncovering Women's Stories" from March 7 to August 9.
Our program for January was presented by Andrea on how to make Chenille-style Fabric Wigs. This was the type of wig she had learned to make in a class she took at John C. Campbell Folk School with Shelley Thornton. Andrea gave us an excellent hand out on how do this and shared examples. Thanks, Andrea!
Next Meeting
Our next meeting is Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Irvington Library at 10:00 a.m. If you have not already paid your dues, Jude will still be collecting at the February meeting. Katie will present a program on felting. She will be demonstrating. If you would like to work along with her, bring the following supplies if you have them: felting needles, roving, a foam, Styrofoam or brush pad to support your project and protect the work surface and needles. She will also show us how to make an armature out of pipe cleaners as a base for making animals or dolls with needle felting. This will be a fun program you won't want to miss, especially if you have never done needle felting or have and need inspiration.
