May Meeting

The newsletter will be short this month.  We did not have an official meeting but the following members enjoyed a field trip to the Indiana State Museum:  Julie G., Julie W., Ann R., Kathryn, Sue, Virginia, Sandy, Mary, Andrea, Maggie, and our tour guide Mary Jane.  Unfortunately members from the River City Doll Club group were unable to attend.  We missed them and hope to see them next year.  Our challenge this year was to make a Tarot Doll.  Due to the nature of our field trip we did not have anyone bring their Tarot Challenge to this meeting, so everyone who made a challenge doll please bring it to the June meeting.

Our tour guide, Mary Jane, took us into the storage area of the museum where few people get to see behind the scenes.  She unboxed many quilts and clothing pieces from their archival storage.  There were antique quilts of all sorts including Amish quilts, vintage applique and crazy quilts.  The clothing items Mary Jane showed us were so wonderful to see with much intricate workmanship.  Some of the clothing had been donated by an Italian immigrant family who came to Indianapolis.  The history of these quilts and garments are all unique in their own way and we are so fortunate that the Indiana State Museum has been able to collect them for us to see.  Thank you, Mary Jane, for a most enjoyable tour.  It was truly fascinating!

Here are some photos of a few of the items Mary Jane showed us.

After the tour we had lunch at the Farmer's Market CafĂ© at the Indiana State Museum.  The food was delicious and we would highly recommend it to anyone who visits the museum.  We had our pin doll exchange during lunch.  Those who got one of the pin dolls please bring to our June meeting for all to see!

On a sad note we have learned that one of our former members and a wonderful dollmaker,  Ellen Daniels-Howell, passed away in her sleep on May 10th.  She had become involved in interfaith mission work in Kenya.  Our condolences go out to her family and friends.

Next Meeting

At the June meeting on the 17th, Katie will be presenting a program on lingerie for dolls.  Doesn't that sound interesting!  Sue's UFO challenge is due.  Hope you can complete one of your UFO's by then.  Maybe there will be a prize????  Also bring your Tarot dolls and pin dolls from May for Show and Tell!
